HISTORICAL PRESERVATION COMMISSION lufhlihY�y TUESDAY9 AUGUST 219 200 7 Present: Paul Dwyer, Russell Martin, Don McClure, Liz Springer, Terri Patton Absent: Patti Walker Staff. Cecile Carson, Director of Economic Development 1. Call Meeting to Order Meeting was called to order by Chair Don McClure 2. Approval of Minutes Motion was made by Liz Springer and seconded by Russell Martin to approve the minutes July 17, 2007. Passed unanimously.. 3. Discuss and consider Preserve America program Cecile Carson stated that Preserve America is a White House initiative developed with the goals of increased local participation in preservation, support for the economic vitality of communities, using historic assets for economic development and community revitalization, and encouraging people to experience and appreciate local historic resources through education and heritage tourism programs. The initiative is an excellent match for the historic preservation interests of Sanger. The designation will provide Sanger with additional marketing benefits and access to Preserve America grant funds. The process includes the completion of an application including a resolution of support from the City of Sanger City Council which the Council approved August 20. Ms. Carson requested approval by the Commission to continue the application process. Motion by Terri Patton and seconded by Paul Dwyer. Passed unanimously. 4. Discuss and consider boundaries for a historic district 5. Discuss and consider properties for historic designation The Commission combined the discussion of items 4 and 5. The members discussed structures in the area between I-35, FM 455, lst Street and Austin Street. The members discussed individual structures and issues regarding encouraging owners to preserve structures. Members discussed the current zoning ordinance which requires brick structures if new houses are constructed and how this is not appropriate in many of the areas discussed if the goal is preservation of historic character of the area. The members determined that an aerial map would be beneficial in identifying all the structures mentioned. Liz Springer agreed to work on a map and all commissioners were asked to share information with her. Cecile Carson will discuss aerials with Sam Renz and make contact with As. Springer. Liz Springer made a motion to proceed with reviewing properties using an aerial of the area between I-35, FM 455, lst Street and Austin Street. Motion was seconded by Terri Patton. Motion passed unanimously. 6. Discussion of proposed historic district Ms. Carson stated that the Denton certificate of appropriateness information was attached. 7. Discuss appointment of a new member Members discussed possible members and agreed to as volunteers to submit applications by September 4 to be considered by Council for appointment. 8. Possible List of Future Agenda Items. Ms. Carson stated the Historic Ordinance would be considered by the Planning and Zoning Commission at their next meeting. City Council action should be scheduled for September 17, 2007. Meeting adjourned.
