Staff. Cecile Carson, Director of Economic Development
1. Call Meeting to Order
Meeting was called to order by Chair Don McClure
2. Approval of Minutes
Motion was made by Liz Springer and seconded by Russell Martin to approve the minutes July 17,
2007. Passed unanimously..
3. Discuss and consider Preserve America program
Cecile Carson stated that Preserve America is a White House initiative developed with the goals of
increased local participation in preservation, support for the economic vitality of communities, using
historic assets for economic development and community revitalization, and encouraging people to
experience and appreciate local historic resources through education and heritage tourism
programs.
The initiative is an excellent match for the historic preservation interests of Sanger. The
designation will provide Sanger with additional marketing benefits and access to Preserve America
grant funds. The process includes the completion of an application including a resolution of support
from the City of Sanger City Council which the Council approved August 20. Ms. Carson requested
approval by the Commission to continue the application process.
Motion by Terri Patton and seconded by Paul Dwyer. Passed unanimously.
4. Discuss and consider boundaries for a historic district
5. Discuss and consider properties for historic designation
The Commission combined the discussion of items 4 and 5. The members discussed structures in
the area between I-35, FM 455, lst Street and Austin Street. The members discussed individual
structures and issues regarding encouraging owners to preserve structures. Members discussed the
current zoning ordinance which requires brick structures if new houses are constructed and how this
is not appropriate in many of the areas discussed if the goal is preservation of historic character of
the area. The members determined that an aerial map would be beneficial in identifying all the
structures mentioned. Liz Springer agreed to work on a map and all commissioners were asked to
share information with her. Cecile Carson will discuss aerials with Sam Renz and make contact with
As. Springer. Liz Springer made a motion to proceed with reviewing properties using an aerial of
the area between I-35, FM 455, lst Street and Austin Street. Motion was seconded by Terri Patton.
Motion passed unanimously.
