Subject: 2000-2001 Budget
Even though we've had our budget workshops, there seems to be
confusion on the status of the proposed budget. We have scheduled
another workshop on Monday to finish all of the decisions. The proposed
budget MUST be in the City Secretary's office by September 1.
The object of confusion seems to be the salaries. Some of you feel that the
Department Head's recommendations are acceptable while others do not
share this feeling. The only comment I would like to make is, the Council
should look at the end results of the salaries not the percent of increase.
An employee might get a 25% increase and still be at or barely above the
minimum the Council has set. If you look at the employee, analyze their
job and compare their proposed salary to the market, is it too much? If it is
then you need to make adjustments but if it is not too much then the
percent is not important. Your Department Heads are telling you, the
proposed salary is what this person is worth.
