Qualifications and Requirements
For
Specific Licenses and Certifications
1. The Council of American Bung Officials (CABO) issues a Certified
Building Official certification to persons capable of demonstrating a
comprehensive knowledge of building codes, legal aspects of building
codes, building plan review and building department administration.
The examination is comprised of four modules. Each module is 2 hours
in length. A passing score is 75 on each module.
2. International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO) examinations
are four hours in length. A passing score is 75 on the overall exam.
3. International Fire Code Institute (IFCI) examinations are four hours
in length. A passing score is 75 on the overall exam.
4. International Association of Plumbing & Mechanical Officials
(IAPMO) examinations are four hours in length. A passing score is 75
on the overall exam.
5. American Association of Code Enforcement (AACE) examinations
are four hours in length. A passing score is 75 on the overall exam.
6. In 2000, both the Southern Standard Building Code Congress
International (SBCCI) and the International Code Conference (ICC)
Residential Energy Conservation Plan Examiner, Residential
Energy Conservation Inspector, Commercial Energy Conservation
Plan Examiner and the Commercial Energy Conservation
Inspector certification examinations prerequisites were a minimum of
40 classroom hours pertaining to energy conservation methods and
instruction in proper energy plan review and inspection. The
examinations were each 2 hours in length, requiring a passing score of
75, respectively.
7. The State requirements for obtaining a Master Electrician License is
12,000 hours of on -the job training under supervision of master
electrician, held a journeyman electrician license for at least two years,
and pass the master electrician examination with a minimum score of
70.
8. The State requirements for obtaining a Code Enforcement Officer
License is 36 classroom hours, one year internship under a licensed
Code Enforcement Officer and pass the Code Enforcment Officer
examination with a minimum score of 70.
9. The State requirements for obtaining a Plumbing Inspector License
is a combination of 500 hours training and experience in the plumbing
industry, 12 classroom hours at the State Plumbing Board of
Examiners facility in Austin, TX. and pass the Plumbing Inspector
examination with a minimum score of 70.
10. The State requirements for obtaining a Designated Representative
License is 40 classroom hours and pass the Designated
Representative examination with a minimum score of 70.
11. The State requirements for obtaining a Professional Real Estate
Inspector license is 320 classroom hours, 7 years of inspection
experience in building construction and pass the Professional Real
Estate Inspector examination with a minimum score of 70.
12. The State requirements for obtaining a Fire Inspector License is 420
classroom hours and pass the Fire inspector examination with a
minimum score of 70.
All of the certifications and licenses require continuing education classroom
hours each year for renewal.
